Hymenoplasty

Hymenoplasty surgery, also known as hymen restoring surgery is a surgical method to restore the membrane located in the lower half of the vagina known as the hymen. This stringy and elastic pink-coloured membrane is generally torn with the first sexual penetration of women, but it can also break after a physical accident, unforeseen movements or using tampons. Hymen reconstruction is a simple procedure that involves suturing the torn edges together with dissolvable stitches.

How Does The Surgery Work?

Three major procedures are used in hymenoplasty surgery:

  • Hymen Stitching: A primary hymenoplasty surgery procedure is to sew up the fractured hymens or the residual hymens. Sutures usually disintegrate within a few days. As a result, the patient does not need to return to the clinic to have the sutures removed.
  • Hymen Reconstruction: If there is inadequate tissue to suture the hymen together, a hymenoplasty operation can still be performed. The hymen will be rebuilt using living tissue taken from your body.
  • Alloplant technique: If the body lacks tissues for hymen reconstruction, artificial procedures can be applied. Biomaterials that have been chemically treated are known as alloplants. It is frequently utilised in transplants. The alloplant technique is used in hymenoplasty surgery by inserting an alloplant instead of a hymen.

The Hymenoplasty procedure does not have any serious adverse effects. Just like any other operation, hymenoplasty can result in a few problems. Although difficulties can develop, they are usually minor and vary from woman to woman.

Following hymenoplasty surgery, doctors advise waiting at least 6 to 8 weeks before engaging in sexual activity. (At the very least, it takes 15 days for the vaginal tissues to start healing.)
